What is the proper way to use a fire extinguisher?
One of the most important factors when using a fire extinguisher is to ensure that you have the proper fire extinguisher for the hazards nearby.  Fire extinguishers are designed to extinguish specific types of fires and may not be effective fighting other types of fire.  An inspection by one of United Fire’s fire safety specialists will ensure that you have the proper coverage and extinguisher type within your facility.

Using a fire extinguisher can easily be remembered using P-A-S-S.

P-Pull the pin
A-Aim at the base of the fire
S-Squeeze the lever
S-Sweep from side to side

Pull, Aim, Squeeze and Sweep.

Should you require an in depth fire extinguisher training session, United Fire can help! Our trained fire safety specialists can perform fire extinguisher training for your employees at your facility. We offer two types of classes:  a laser guided fire extinguisher simulator and a live fire with use of real fire extinguishers.  For more information about our fire extinguisher demonstration classes, contact us today:  (520) 622-3629.

What is the most effective type of fire extinguisher?
One fire extinguisher is not necessarily more effective than another.  The chemicals in fire extinguishers are designed to fight specific types of fires.  The most common type of fire extinguisher is however a multi-purpose fire extinguisher (ABC) that fights type A, B and C fires.  The different types of fires are noted below:

  • A-Type: Ordinary combustibles such as wood, paper, cloth, and trash
  • B-Type: Flammable liquids such as gasoline, oil and paint
  • C-Type: Fires involving electrical equipment
D-Type: Fire involving combustible metals such as magnesium, potassium and powdered aluminum
  • K-Type: Fire involving cooking media such as oils and fats

If you are uncertain of the proper extinguisher to use with your hazards, United Fire will assist you with ensuring you have proper fire extinguisher coverage: (520) 622-3639.

What maintenance is required for my fire extinguisher?
Maintenance cycles for fire extinguishers vary based on the type of fire extinguisher.  Most local fire codes require fire extinguishers to be maintained per the standards established in National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Standard 10.  Fire extinguishers are required to be annually inspected and are required to undergo a thorough six year maintenance requiring new parts and chemicals, and a hydrostatic test at the five or twelve year mark.  If you have questions regarding the maintenance cycle of your fire extinguishers, contact us today at (520) 622-3639.  If you are an existing customer, we can probably even tell you which of your fire extinguishers are due for maintenance.

What kind of cylinders do you fill?
United Fire can fill the cylinders that contain:

  • Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
  • Fire Extinguishers containing:
  • ABC Powder
  • BC Powder
  • K Class Chemical
  • Class D Powder
  • Water Mist
  • FFFP Foam
  • Purple K
  • Halon
  • Clean Agent
  • SCBA Bottles (breathing air)
  • Clean Agent Systems Bottles
  • Nitrogen

Do you refill CO2 tanks?
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) tanks and fire extinguishers can be refilled at our Tucson facility located at 335 North 4th Avenue.   Refilling these cylinders can be performed while you wait and generally takes less than 15 minutes, unless a hydrostatic test is required.  Arrangements for a fire safety specialist to come to your facility and pickup the bottles can be made by calling (520) 622-3629.

What is a hydrostatic test?
A hydrostatic test includes a detailed visual inspection of the interior of the cylinder to ensure no rusting or corrosion has occurred.  The cylinder is then pressurized with water to 5/3 of the rated cylinder pressure, ensuring the integrity of the cylinder.  United Fire is the only DOT certified high pressure hydrostatic testing facility in Southern Arizona.
